Hello you 🙂 Did you know today is World Heritage Day? We’re celebrating it with Nrityagram, exploring it through photographs.
I first found out on Facebook, as you do 😛 (along with a ton of what-will-your-status-update-be-in-ten-years posts)
Nrityagram literally means Dance village. Located in Hesarghatta (which according to me is in the outskirts of Bangalore 😛 ) , it was designed by renowned architect Gerard D’cunha for danseuse Protima Bedi (née Gauri)
It’s a quaint little place that’s a world away from the vices of city life. The vernacular style of architecture truly smelts nature and built space.
You feel like it’s almost always just been here. Much like those giant trees we’ve seen in our schools that seems to have weathered a lot, bent but not broken.
“Where you breathe, eat, sleep, dream, talk, imagine – dance”, stimulating all of the senses, as was intended by the founder, “in a forsaken place amidst nature where nothing exists except dance”. She is no more but her legacy lives on.
“A place where dancers drop negative qualities… to embrace their colleagues as sisters and support each other in their journey towards becoming dancers of merit”
It follows the Gurukul system of education where the students reside on campus and share a close bond with their Gurus. The picture above is a representation of this modern day Gurukul. I was lucky enough to be able to view an Odissi performance 🙂 (no pictures) The studio resonates with every step the dancers take, filling it with cosmic energy.
This place has an exuberance that grounds you, makes you one with the elements.
Every art lover, architecture lover, dance lover, nature lover, life lover will find this place refuels them, nourishes them, invigorates them.
It makes for a great weekend getaway! You should go some time 🙂 You can check out their website for more info.

One of my friends, who is a Bharatanatyam dancer, also performed for us in the beautifully set amphitheater.
I hope you like this post 🙂
